These type of scams typically occur over the phone or at the victim’s front door.

“The scammers, often sounding legitimate and quite convincing, threaten to shut off electric service immediately unless instant payment is made,” said Penni Conner, Eversource Senior Vice President and Chief Customer Officer. “These scammers can be relentless but they’re only successful if they catch our customers off-guard and scare them into making a payment. We remind customers, if something doesn’t sound right or feel right, trust your gut, and don’t pay.”

To prevent becoming a victim to scams involving utilities, keep these simple yet smart safety tips in mind:

  • A heightened sense of urgency is a major red flag. Don’t ever provide an instant payment. Eversource representatives never demand customers to make instant payments over the phone or meet at a payment center.
  • Never provide personal or financial information over the phone, online, or in person to unsolicited parties.
  • Be aware that even a caller ID that appears to be from Eversource may be a sophisticated tactic to make the call seem more legitimate.
  • Ask for basic account information to confirm that you’re speaking with an actual Eversource representative. When in doubt, call the company directly at 1-800-286-2000.

The BBB also encourages the use of its Scam Tracker system, which provides updated information about the latest scams. Users can submit scam reports and see the most common scams in their area.
